Suicide should be analyzed scientifically and objectively.
Self-centeredness is a cause of suicide
Émile Durkheim. 1858-1917. Sociologist.
While alcoholism and mental illness may be contributing factors, Durkheim argues that people with less frequent communication are actually more likely to commit suicide. Although suicide had previously been considered an internal problem, he quantitatively analyzed it as a social phenomenon.
Durkheim focused on Catholics and Protestants. Comparing the two, he found that Protestants had a higher suicide rate, attributing this difference to the Catholic Mass. Catholics regularly celebrate Mass, providing ample opportunities for social interaction. In other words, even within the same Christian faith, he argued that it wasn't religion itself that prevented suicide, but rather the increased frequency of communication within the community that reduced suicide rates.
He then identified suicide as a social phenomenon and classified it into the following four categories.
1. Altruistic suicide: Suicide resulting from conformity to a group's value system.
2. Self-centered suicide: Suicide resulting from a lack of communication with others.
3. Anomalous suicide: Suicide resulting from a loss of purpose due to already being fulfilled.
4. Fatal Suicide: Suicide due to unfulfilled desires
In conclusion, the book states that suicide can be reduced by increasing the frequency of communication based on connections such as occupation and marital relationships. Although written 100 years ago, much of what the book says is still relevant today. Truly a classic. I'm happy that I'm gradually able to interact with other book lovers on this account. Communication is important for living.
