point

When you try to deceive someone, you are often the one who gets deceived the most.

Human value fluctuates.

• It's easy to forget mistakes.

I find the hobbies that come with love more enjoyable than the love itself.

La Rochefco

1613-1680

Duke of Paris.

In 17th-century France, maxims (aphorisms, proverbs, or short admonitions) were popular as an intellectual pastime. This book is a collection of 504 maxims by Rochefcaud. They are easy to read, without complex theories, and their humor is doubled by the use of paradoxes and metaphors.

For example, it states, "Our virtues are often nothing more than vices in disguise," and in just a line or two, it exposes the ulterior motives and self-love that lurk beneath the facade of noble qualities like love, friendship, and courage, challenging the reader. It makes us realize the importance of looking at the other side of things and the importance of reflecting on society and ourselves.

The Five Virtues and the True Feelings Behind Them

・Being humble ⇄ If you try not to deceive others, you are more likely to be deceived yourself.

Benevolence ⇄ Weakness leads to betrayal.

Honesty ⇄ Deceiving others means deceiving yourself.

Justice ⇄ Promises begin with hope and are fulfilled by fear.

Friendship ⇄ It's more shameful to doubt than to be deceived.
